Grand Canyon Field Institute helps educators bring the Grand Canyon to their students in a number of ways.

Dynamic Earth
Unravel the mystery of how Grand Canyon was formed. Includes exploration of a fossil bed and a hike along the rim with several stops for engaging activities focusing on the geologic history of Grand Canyon.
Grade level: 4th-6th Duration: 5 hours

Grand Canyon Rocks!Hike along the rim and discover the geologic processes that formed Grand Canyon through hands-on activities. A shorter version of Dynamic Earth that omits the fossil exploration.
Grade level: 4th-6th Duration: 2 ½ hours

Stories in Stone
Use the tools of a paleontologist to discover clues preserved in the rocks of Grand Canyon. Hunt for fossils and learn what they tell us about the history of the Canyon’s formation.
Grade level: 3rd-6th Duration: 2 hours

Life on the Edge: Explore the plant and animal life that calls Grand Canyon home. Hike along the rim and learn forest and desert ecology through hands-on activities and games.
Grade level: 3rd-5th Duration: 5 hours

Rails and Tales
Discover the people who have shaped Grand Canyon’s history. Walk through Grand Canyon Village, engage in interactive games, and learn about the changing ways people have valued the Canyon over time.
Grade level: 4th-6th Duration: 2 ½ hours

Time Travelers: Connecting to the Past
Become an archaeologist and unearth clues about Grand Canyon’s ancient inhabitants. Participate in an archaeological “dig”, explore ancient ruins and a museum, and climb the Desert View watchtower to learn about the native peoples that shaped Grand Canyon’s ancient history.

Smithsonian Journeys

Smithsonian Journeys
These trips focus on culture and history, are guided by the experts at various branches of the Smithsonian Museums and are operated by the top tour companies. While the American Museum of Natural History trips often have an environmental, wildlife conservation, or biology focus, many of the Smithsonian Journeys highlight historical and cultural attractions. Some of their most popular itineraries for families with children include their "Family Odyssey through Greece," "Family Adventure in Jackson Hole" which focuses on the mountain's summer delights, the "Tanzanian Family Safari," an "Alaska Coastal Wilderness Cruise for Families" and "Family Adventure in the Galapagos Islands." Here too, a portion of the fees for each tour goes to support the museum's work.

Fort George National Historic Site of Canada

Fort George National Historic Site of Canada: Learning Experiences
During the War of 1812, Fort George served as the headquarters for the Centre Division of the British Army. These forces included British regulars, local militia, aboriginal warriors, and Runchey’s corps of freed slaves. Major General Sir Isaac Brock, “the saviour of Upper Canada” served here until his death at the Battle of Queenston Heights in October, 1812. Brock and his aide-de-camp John Macdonell were initially buried within the fort. Fort George was destroyed by American artillery fire and captured during the Battle of Fort George in May 1813. The U.S. forces used the fort as a base to invade the rest of Upper Canada, however, they were repulsed at the Battles of Stoney Creek and Beaver Dams. After a seven month occupation, the fort was retaken in December and remained in British hands for the remainder of the war. After the war, the fort was partially rebuilt, and by the 1820’s it was falling into ruins.

For over 28 years, the Outdoor Education Centre at Willowgrove has welcomed students from all over the GTA to our various programs. We are excited about the opportunity of introducing your students to an agricultural experience or to challenging them in our climbing gym or low ropes course.

Bring your class for a full day or half day of fun and learning. Whether it be an agricultural field trip or an outdoor learning experience, we are able to provide a program to fulfill your curriculum needs. All programs are linked to the Ontario Curriculum. Programs are adaptable to your grade level and to the specific focus of your unit of study. Our flexibility allows the length and content of the program to be modified to suit the needs of your students.

Located in Vaughan, ON Reptilla is a reptile zoo that is specifically designed to provide an educational, interactive, and entertaining experience with reptiles. The large, naturalistic exhibits are designed to suite the needs of each species and provide visitors with a look into the environments where each species may be found. Live demonstrations, feedings, and meet the keeper events provide hands on experiences for all visitors.

Educational Programs - Reptilia's educational programs are written to suit curriculum guidelines to ensure that the lesson given is compliant with provincial standards. Our programs are directly linked to the topics the students are learning in the classroom. Reptilia staff also conduct workshops for teachers to provide them with additional background knowledge needed to teach science in the classroom.

Ecological thought meets Action when we give students one-of-a-kind learning that combines theory with practical hands-on experiences in designing and creating environmental projects. Ontario Schools are inspired to develop their own projects once they return to their communities.

Activities at the Edge have included developing ecological policies and procedures, conducting environmental assessments, facility design, trail development, rehabilitation and gardening, designing rooftop gardens, implementing ecologically appropriate practices, orienteering, nature interpretation, and Council of All Beings; an experience where environmental elements speak through mask-wearing student participants.

Northern Edge Algonquin, our off-the-grid environmental school in Ontario, has been receiving national and international attention for its ecological design and operation and we often make trips to schools to teach about our environmental practices.
